SEVEN THINGS YOU MUST KNOW Buying a new mattress is more than just filling that empty space on your bed yet many folks go about making that purchase as if it amounted to no more than that. You spend a third of your life on your bed. More than that you are in a prone position, which is unnatural considering the human body is constructed to remain upright. Your mattress, therefore, becomes an essential element in your over all health and well-being. Establishing the exactly correct match between your mattress and your sleeping style is a must. MUST KNOW # 1 Finding the perfect match for your sleeping position. There are three basic choices: back, stomach, and side. Virtually everybody establishes a preferred position to which they return night after night. Stomach sleepers (not generally recommended by medical specialists) require a very firm sleeping base with no more than an inch or so of soft material on top. This combination will help keep the spine in that all-important straight position. Finish this out with a soft, very thin pillow and sleeping should be a comfortable experience. Back sleepers need a thick, firm, base (perhaps only moderately firm if you weigh less than a 110 pounds) with a top layer of one or two inches of semi-firm to soft material that allows adequate support for the parts that sink as well as the parts that don’t. Side sleepers (the position typically recommended) need a three step mattress. It needs a firm base, a semi-firm middle section, with no more than an inch or so of soft material on top. The pillow should be firm enough and thick enough to cradle the head and neck in a position that does not angle it up or down from its natural position. Neck and shoulder aches and pains will plague you the following day if the fit is not exactly correct. In each position the objective is to maintain a straight spine as you lay on the mattress. If you experience tossing and turning, aches and pains, tiredness upon awakening, or a generally grumpy disposition, investigate the match between your sleep position and the construction of your mattress.
Always Purchase the Foundation that is Matched to your Mattress It is not just a way for stores to make more money. It is the only smart way to assure the longest life possible for your mattress as well as the best sleep possible for life. Mattresses and foundations are engineered to work together. It is no place to skimp. Only Work With Well Trained Mattress Professionals Since no piece of home furnishing affects your health more than your mattress make sure you are dealing with professionals who know their trade. Feel free to ask all the questions that come to mind and if you don’t understand the answer keep after it until you are satisfied. Don ‘t be intimidated by unfamiliar mattress jargon – you should not be expected to ‘know the language’. Don’t remain in the dark. Ask for clarification. That only defines you as a savvy shopper – not stupid! The sales person should ask about your typical sleeping position and any health or mood issues that could possibly be related to your sleep time experience. You just can’t expect to receive this kind of essential information from the marketing material printed on the outside of a box or wrapper the way you must often do at a discount house. Boxes can’t answer your important, specific, questions. And remember, you run the real risk of being both uncomfortable and deeply disappointed whenever you let the price be the bargain rather than the mattress, itself. Understand the Four Major Types of Mattress Construction Airbeds and waterbeds have both come a long way during the past several decades. Both are adjustable to the sleepers needs. The air mattress is adjustable on an instant’s notice. It can inflate or deflate on the sleeper’s whim. Waterbeds are ‘adjusted’ when they are first set up (and can be modified with some effort later on). They may require periodic chemical balancing of the water. Both have come to resemble the look of the more traditional mattresses. Tempered steel coils – also called inner-springs – represent the age-old, most popular mattress. They have as a base a large number of closely placed coil springs that offer the underlying support. These come in several levels of support from light to very firm (sometimes referred to as ‘orthopedic’). The base of springs is covered with a layer (or several layers) of cushioning on top. It may be cotton padding, usually quilted, or some type of foam. That top comfort layer may be no more than an inch thick or it may be several inches thick. The newer foams also come in several degrees of firmness – a sufficient variety to meet every need. Memory foam gradually forms itself around your body as directed by the heat you generate. Latex foam immediately cradles your in’s and out’s, bulges and recesses. Latex generally lasts longer. Foam is used both for constructing entire mattresses and to provide upper layers to meet individual requirements for support on all of the basic types of mattresses. In any basic ‘type’ the two sides of the mattress (double and larger) can be tailor made to meet the needs of partners who share a bed. Always Try Out the Mattress in the Showroom It’s not only expected, it is essential that you give a mattress an extended trial run in the store. After you have your choices narrowed down spend time laying on them. A minute or two is not sufficient. Spend a minimum of fifteen minutes in your preferred sleeping position. If you are a side sleeper spend time on both of your sides. If you sleep with a partner, try it together to make sure there is room for you to each move about, as we all do during the night. You normally move or turn some forty times during an eight-hour sleep, so plenty of room to roam is essential. Some stores offer to trade your mattress for another after a few weeks if you are not satisfied. That may seem nice, but it is no substitute for that initial in-store trial. Think of the hassle involved in returning one and bringing another one home. Avoid that if you can. If Credit is a Consideration, Ask About In-Store Financing. Intelligently purchasing the quality of mattress you need and deserve at a specialty store may cost a bit more than what you will find yourself paying at a discount store. Don’t settle for something less than you require in order to improve or maintain your health, well being, and sunny disposition. Considering all the things for which you use credit, few things can be more important than establishing a healthful, appropriate, truly restful sleep-time experience. If you need credit, ask about the in-store plans and compare them with your other options. A bargain that you can pay for out of your billfold is really no bargain if it doesn’t satisfy (or possibly even impairs) your important, long term needs. Arrange for the Disposal of Your Old Mattress and Foundation Before You Take Delivery of the New Set. Ever try fitting an old mattress into a garbage bag? The point is that finding a way of getting rid of things that size is no easy matter. Most furniture stores will arrange to take care of that for you either free of charge or for a modest fee. (Could you expect that from the big discount stores?) Agencies such as Good Will and the Salvation Army will usually be happy to receive mattresses that are in moderately good shape. You need to consider this, however; if the mattress is not good enough to maintain your health and comfort, do you really want to offer it to somebody else? Certainly not within your own family.
IN PRAISE OF THE MATTRESS There is a tendency among us often fickle human beings to place less value on things that are out of sight or remain in the background or don’t scream out for our attention. A mattress is one of those quiet, unobtrusive, aspects of life. Because of that we may relegate it to the ‘not so important’ file in our list of priorities. Many would shell out a thousand dollars for a new sound system without batting an eye because of what it will do for them while they are awake to interact with it. But a mattress? It’s something you aren’t even aware of while using it – unless, of course, it’s working poorly. If you’re one of those folks, reset your head. Every morning when you awaken feeling rested, comfortable, and ready to go, take a moment to recognize your mattress for how well it has done its job during those past eight hours. Think bargain as well – around forty cents a night to perform its dependable miracle for you. |
